Comic: Adventures at Con
|
There are just a few comments I'd like to make about the Vampire "News" Blog. There are a few things you'll see listed there, and a few things not, and I feel the need to explain my choices in that matter. First of all, I try to find all the news I can on vampires in various media. For example: movies, comic books, video games, etc. are the most popular forms of entertainment that vampires appear in. Books are a large source as well, but I'll come to that later. I check various sites, but after getting wary of not finding much news, I stumbled upon the richness of Google News, and that is where most of the news comes from now.
Themes/Coding: NEWS: Major news reports, such as people killing peacocks thinking they're vampires. COMICS: Comics include paperback comics (the traditional kind), Manga, graphic novels, and basically anything that puts words and pictures together in print format. TELEVISION: This is pretty self-explanatory. Anything on the tube. MOVIES: Movies include big-screen shows, as well as ones on DVD, VHS, etc. MUSIC: Bands, songs, albums, etc. with vampire names or themes LORE: This category describes a lot. Think of it as basically the study of vampires. Classes being held on vampire lore, papers written, or online excerpts on the general study of vampires. GAMES: This category also covers a lot. Video games, board games, role-playing games, etc. TOME: I know I've mentioned that books aren't often mentioned because there are way too many, but on the rare occasion where I do mention books, this category might also cover magazines, or other print news. STAGE: There are not many vampire shows in theater, but when there are, I'll mention them in this category. OTHER: Everything else.
I stray away from: News where someone is compared to a vampire. I don't think it's entertaining, useful or otherwise meaningful to add that to a blog that is supposed to be fun. But more so, and forgive my harshness here, I feel that reporters that are (as of late) comparing murderers to vampires, and aren't telling the public what these people really are- killers. These people deserve no place in fictional entertainment, nor space on my website for glorified killings. Celebrities themselves. Sarah Michelle Gellar, Joss Whedon, Bella Lugosi, and Leslie Nielsen all deserve credit on the vampire history walk of fame, but their current endeavors (unless vampire related) don't interest me (or anyone else for that matter) very much. If you want celebrity news, I'm sure there are lots of places to find it. Books: With the number of books published every year about vampires (non-fiction) and those involving vamps (fiction) it's hard to pick and choose, and I certainly cannot find all of them. Vampire is also used as a metaphor, and therefore is in psychology titles, teenage behavior titles, and many more. If you are interested in finding newly published books, do a search at your favorite bookstore site with the word vampire in it, and you will come up with many. If you are simply looking for popular books involving vampires, I can direct you toward a few (Anne Rice's vampire chronicles, Buffy the Vampire Slayer book series, L.A Banks Vampire Huntress series, etc.). Local Events: With Halloween a favorite, there are a lot of vampire, ghost and zombie references out there. This is going to make your search for local events a little bit more difficult, and definitely lots more for me to go through. But that's okay. At any rate, I'm not going to list local events. Most VHU members are in Minnesota, and I know a couple readers farther out, so "local" isn't really local. I recommend checking your local papers for events involving vampires, vampire hunting or plays with vampires. If you need help, let me know. Plays, Movie showings, etc.: This probably should be covered under Local Events, but I feel it needs to be stated here. If I announce a play of something regarding vampires is being done, it's only because it's the first run. After that, you'll have to check your local media for when it's being produced in your area. For example, Dracula the musical isn't new anymore. So I'm not really going to report that it's coming to Hoboken, Hackensack or Hill Valley. Porn: I would think this is self-explanatory, but even so, perhaps I should say something here. Vampires in porn are pretty common, so if I accidentally list a movie link without realizing it's porn, I apologize. I would never purposely include that in this site, for the sole reason that vampires in porn makes a mockery of our mockery and that's just not right. Besides, most porn is really cheesy and lame. I want you to enjoy the intellectualism of vampires. Um...if it exists at all. Sites where you have to log in: I hate it when you have to register to a site when you just want to look at one thing. I won't link to these (or I'll try not to) though if the news goes to their archives (usually about two weeks after initial posting) then you may have to decide if you want to register or not.
VHU is in no way affiliated with: Vampire Magazine, Vampire Church or any of the Vampire Masquerade games. Nor are we a fan club for/of vampires. VHU serves to watch the vampire community, and strike them down when necessary.*
